Young
Midwives Leadership (YML) Program of Bangladesh Midwifery Society (BMS)
BMS has twinning with Royal College
of Midwives (RCM) UK since 2017 supported by UNFPA. BMS under the project is
running the Young Midwives Leadership (YML) Program since 2018. Till date 51
midwives received continuous leadership capacity development support from BMS
through different trainings, coaching and mentorship support from the advisors
of Royal College of Midwives (RCM)-UK. YML is a one-year program. Every year a
new cohort of midwives are getting this support.
In 2018, the first cohort had
started with five midwives. Later on, after election on Sep 2018, 15 executive
board members including the five midwives were in the YML program from 2018 to
2019. In 2020, 7 and in 2021, 5 more midwives and 3 interns joined in the
program through a selection process. In 2022, 15 newly elected executive board
members and one intern joined the program.
Midwives under the YML program of
BMS are working with profound reputation at their work place. YML members received
skill development support from BMS on computer technology, English language,
positive thinking, media advocacy, policy level advocacy, communication,
documentation, event management and leadership. They are highly motivated for
the development and improvement of the Midwifery profession in Bangladesh which
is visible in different national and international forum’s presentations.
One of a former YML and Secretary
of BMS, Mst. Karima Akter received award from the Asia Pacific Alliance on
Human Resources (AAAH) for Health as a Midwife. Karima Akter and another YML, Tania
Akter worked as a midwifery officer in
deputation at the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM) from 2020
to 2021.
